Required Materials and Information

- Application fee (non-refundable $70)
- One transcript from each post-secondary institution attended
- Your application will be reviewed with an unofficial transcript. This will enable the Admissions Committee to review your application without waiting for individual institutions to send originals. If you are offered admission, you must submit your official transcript at that time.
- A personal statement
- Your personal statement should be between 1 and 2 pages in length.
- Explain your motivation for pursuing a PhD degree.
- Describe your previous research experience(s), highlighting objectives, challenges, and outcomes.
- Describe your interests and what attracts you to Rutgers, including area(s) of research interest and naming faculty you would be interested in working with.
- We are looking for highly motivated and resilient students. If there is something in your background that you feel the Admission Committee should know about, include it here. We encourage you to describe your background, challenges, and lived experiences that have influenced your career goals and your ability to pursue a PhD.
- Three letters of recommendation
- Letters from faculty who supervised your research (preferred) or know you well from a classroom experience. The letters should describe your research abilities, productivity, motivation, work ethic, curiosity, initiative, persistence, intellectual ability, and willingness to work with others.
- TOEFL or IELTS scores (for international students where English is not the primary language)
- Curriculum Vitae (resume) is required as supporting documentation
- A GRE test is not required, nor is it considered in the review process
The Admissions Committee for the Graduate Programs in Molecular Biosciences reviews applications for the five participating degree-granting graduate programs. Apply to the program that most closely matches your interests. This will not limit your choice of thesis laboratory.
